Gutter guards vs cleaning: 10-year cost compared

The math, laid out so you can plug in your own numbers.

Gutter guards cost more up front. Cleaning costs money every year. Which is cheaper depends on how many times a year your trees make you clean. Using the national averages below, guards pay for themselves in about 7 years at three cleanings a year, and about 11 years at two. At one cleaning a year, they don’t pay for themselves on cost. That’s why guards make sense under heavy fir and rarely make sense on an open lot.

How do you compare gutter guards with cleaning?

Your house won’t match an average, so here’s how to work it out. Use a real quote and a real cleaning bill.

StepWhat to work out
1. Guard costThe guard price for your home. Get it from a measured quote, not an online calculator.
2. Yearly cleaning costThe price of one cleaning, times how many you need a year. That’s two for most homes here, and three under heavy fir.
3. 10 years of cleaningYour yearly cleaning cost times 10. Add a little, since prices go up over time.
4. Upkeep with guardsGuards cut cleaning but don’t end it. In a This Old House homeowner survey, 17% never had to clean their gutters after installing guards, and 41% cleaned once a year. Under fir and cedar, plan on brushing off the guards every year or two.
5. CompareAdd the guard cost to 10 years of guard upkeep. Compare that with 10 years of cleaning.

What does the 10-year comparison look like with real numbers?

Here’s an example for a home with 150 feet of gutter, using national 2026 averages from This Old House. Professional cleaning averages $360 a visit (typical range $191–$529). Professional gutter guard installation averages $39.71 per foot. These are market figures, not Pro Flow prices. They show how the decision works, and your own quote replaces them.

150 ft of gutter, over 10 yearsCleaning onlyGuards + occasional brush-off
Three cleanings a year (heavy fir or cedar)$10,800$7,757
Two cleanings a year (some tree cover)$7,200$7,757
One cleaning a year (open lot)$3,600$7,757

The guards column is $5,957 to install (150 ft × $39.71), plus five brush-offs over 10 years at the $360 average ($1,800). On those averages, guards come out about $3,000 ahead under heavy trees. At two cleanings a year, it’s roughly break-even. On an open lot, guards cost about $4,000 more. When do gutter guards pay for themselves?

  • Three cleanings a year (heavy fir or cedar): guards pay for themselves fastest. This is common in Duvall, Woodinville, Sultan and on wooded lots.
  • Two cleanings a year (some tree cover): roughly break-even over 10 years. The bigger benefit is staying off the ladder in November.
  • One cleaning a year (few or no trees over the roof): guards rarely pay for themselves on cost alone. We’ll tell you that at the estimate.

What costs do people leave out?

A simple cleaning-vs-guards comparison leaves out what clogged gutters cost when a cleaning gets missed. The expensive problems are rotted wood behind the gutter and under the roof edge, stained siding, and a damp crawl space from water pooling at the foundation. None of those are certain. But they’re why a missed fall cleaning is worse than a missed spring one.

It also leaves out the value of not doing it yourself. Most gutter injuries are ladder falls. The rainy season here means wet ground, a slippery ladder and short days.

What do people overstate about gutter guards?

Guards are often sold with the promise that you’ll never think about your gutters again. That isn’t true here, and planning around it will disappoint you. Expect less work, not no work. See the details in do gutter guards work with fir needles.

Should you add guards when you replace your gutters?

If your gutters need replacing anyway, add guards at the same time. The crew, setup and labor are already paid for, so adding guards to new gutters costs less than adding them later. If you’ll replace your gutters within a couple of years, it usually makes sense to wait and do both together.

Common questions

Yes, on a home with few trees that only needs one cleaning a year. We’d rather tell you that at the estimate than sell you something that won’t pay off.

Quality aluminum guards should last as long as the gutter. Foam and brush inserts don’t, which is part of why we don’t install them.

It can. Alu-Rex backs Gutter Clean Pro with a lifetime clog-free warranty and Gutter Clean with a 25-year warranty against manufacturing defects and clogging. Read what any warranty covers before you count on it.

Yes. Ask us for a guard price and a cleaning price at the same visit, and do the math yourself. Ask for both.

This guide shows a method, not a price list. Actual guard and cleaning costs depend on how much gutter you have, how many stories, access and tree cover. Ask us for measured figures for your property.
